Remembering Avicii: The Legacy of an EDM Icon

I have always been a fan of EDM. I was 6-7 years old when I discovered the genre. My mom would go out dancing on the weekends with her friends. She was friends with a DJ. She listened to 90s trance music and 90s EDM in the car.

As I grew older, my love of the genre would expand. I listened to a lot of alt rock, pop punk, and emo music through my teens. In 2011, I became a huge Skrillex fan. This was due to him working on ‘Reptile’s Theme‘ on the Mortal Kombat 9 album. And eventually Rock ‘N’ Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain) was in Lollipop Chainsaw.

It wouldn’t be until 2012 when I became a fan of my favorite EDM musician Avicii. I was playing Final Fantasy XIII and My Hands by Leona Lewis was the theme for one of the games. This was when I found Collide by Avicii, as Leona Lewis was the main vocals on the song. The Levels was on the radio often.

But is was X You that made me a big fan. You see, I had an emotional reaction to that song – not sure why. The song was called X You. The project was called “Avicii X You”. The song includes sequences from Kian Sang for melody. Naxsy provides the bassline. Martin Kupilas contributes beat and rhythm. Ваня Хакси adds the break. Jonathan Madray, Mateusz Kolata, TheW, and Christian Westphalen are responsible for effects. The music video explains the project and what Avicii did and how the song came together. To this day, it is still one of my favorite songs.

Why Am I Talking About Avicii Today?

Tomorrowland, one of the biggest EDM festivals in the world, featured Avicii’s final set 10 years ago this year. This was in 2015. Because of this Tomorrowland Belgium decided to put out a tribute for the musician called Avicii Forever. He made his festival debut in 2011 and since then has played there until 2015.

Avicii died by suicide in 2018 after a long battle with addiction and mental health issues. Further solidifying that some of the most creative people often are the ones who struggle with the worst afflictions mentally.

I have been thinking about Avicii a lot. My TikTok For You page has been showing me Tomorrowland sets. Like I said, I am a big EDM fan. Seeing the Avicii Forever tribute really made me feel feelings. There was posthumous greatest hits album of the same name, Avicii Forever.
